Featured Snippets: Are You Already Ranking for Them? Could You Be? How to Find Out (And Make it Happen)

Featured Snippets Example

Featured Snippets, sometimes called “Answer Boxes” are a total obsession right now – as these are found at the top of the SERP’s above position 1, they are also referred to as “Position 0,” and they are the best SEO real estate you can get. The question is: How do you get there?

Could Your Site ALREADY Be Ranking For Featured Snippets?

Recently, the professional-level tool, AHREFS, introduced the ability to filter results that show for featured snippets, so let’s fire up this tool and see how this works.

ahrefs - Featured Snippets

1: In Ahrefs, make sure you are in their Site Explorer tool

2: Input your target site domain

3: On the left panel, make sure you are in the Organic Keywords area

RUN A SEARCH TO BRING UP ALL KNOWN INFORMATION

4: Apply Filter – “Target domain must be featured” (i.e., results not on target domain will not be shown)

5: Apply Filter – “Featured snippet”

This will give you a list of results — pages of your site — where you have searches that return Featured Snippets using information on your site. Many people have sites that are already ranking for Snippets/Answers and don’t even know it.

Could Your Site Rank For Featured Snippets Soon?

Studies done to-date have demonstrated that the vast majority of sites in Featured Snippets/Answer Boxes are currently in position 1-10 (first page) for that particular search query — so if your site is currently not ranked on page 1 of Google, there is not much chance of getting to Position 0.

But what if you are on page 1? That’s another story.

And again, we can use our tool (AHREFS) to do a bit of analysis.

This analysis will yield the # of KW searches that also display a Featured Snippet from a site, but where your site also is listed on page 1 of the SERP’s. Using this data, you can try to go after your Position 0 competitor and bump them off so that your site can be “Featured” there instead.

OK, I Get It… So How Do I Get There?
